You finally decided to create your own online business.

But, the question is what kind of online business? Do you have a topic or subject in mind? What do you want to tell the world? Do you want to sell a product? or promote a company?

When you want to create a website, the very first thing you have to do is find a particular subject – a niche.

What is a NICHE?

A niche as a noun: “a specialized segment of the market for a particular kind of product or service,”

or as an adjective: “denoting or relating to products, services or interests that appeal to a small, specialized section of a population.”

So, for example you somehow know a certain market or group of people looking for guitars. So, your niche is GUITAR.

If you know that there`s a certain group of women who are always looking for several ways on how to look young, your niche may probably be ANTI-AGING PRODUCTS.

A niche can be anything!

So, how to find a niche?

Since there is a very long list of choices of niches and as a beginner, I will give some ideas on how you can come up with a good choice of niche you can start with for your first website.

HERE ARE 4 STEPS TO FIND YOUR NICHE:

(1) Your niche may be your interest or your passion.

The first step is to identify what your interests are or what are you passionate about. Make a list of at least 5-10 things you are mostly interested about.

It must be something you really care – especially that you are going to work on it and be on it. Remember, this is going to be your business. So, you may want to work on something you know you have the drive to pursue it.

Here are sample questionnaires that may help you come up with a niche:

  • What topic do you usually talk about?
  • How do you spend your free time?
  • What do you always look forward to doing when you have a spare time?
  • What subjects or topics you read/watch?
  • Do you have an organization or club you belong to?
  • If you want to learn something new, what would it be?

(2) Know the people or the market who are interested in your niche.

To create a profitable business, you first need to find the problems your target readers or market may be experiencing. Then, determine whether you can actually solve them. You may want to do some research too. Find out websites which have the same niche you`re planning to create. These will be your competition.

The presence of competition isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It may actually be showing you if you have found a profitable niche. Analyzing them may help you come up if ever there`s still an opportunity to stand out in the crowd.

Talking to people and reading some magazines may be helpful too.

It`s time to narrow down your list of interests. Make sure at this point you know the market you are targeting for your chosen niche.

(3) Know how to make money on your niche

By now, you should have a pretty good idea what niche you`re going to get into. Maybe, you haven’t narrowed your list down to a single topic, but you`ve likely found some ideas that you are confident about.

At this point, it is good to get an idea on the potential of making money on your chosen niche. So, browse on top products in your category. Find out what kind of affiliations you may want to attach to your niche and know if they are profitable.

Find out how to monetize your chosen niche.

If you already come up and have already a clear plan at this point, then you may have a niche.

(4) Last but not the least, BELIEVE in your niche.

The key point here is believing. If you have that firm belief, you can definitely achieve your goal.

Once you have confirmed the viability of a niche, you are ready to start creating your full-fledged website. But, there are still a lot to learn.

There are some platforms, like Wealthy Affiliate, that offers lessons, tools, and mentors that will help and guide you in building your website.

My final thoughts:

If you believe you have found a business idea you can invest yourself into, take the plunge. The learning and growth that comes from doing will be far greater than the rewards of just planning.
